If you think of Aspen as a ski town, it may surprise you to know that those who visit us in the summer think of us an an arts town. Since the late 1940s when Walter Paepcke first breathed life into this budding cultural Mecca, Aspen has drawn and inspired musicians, painters, writers, photographers, academicians and philosophers--and their admirers.

Commune with Copland under cobalt skies. Enter another time and place through an actor's eyes. Take an art class or spend some time in an artist's studio. Behold dancers as they jete and pirouette. Attend a film festival that offers as much provocative fare as (excuse us) Cannes can.

Aspen is an extraordinary place to experience the transcendence of great art. Don't miss it.

Aspen any time of year; It's a place in Colorado for discoveries. And it's been that way for centuries. The Ute Indians were first to discover this area in the rocky mountains, which they called the Shining mountains. Later the draw would become outdoors recreation in Aspen Colorado. Skiing resorts, snowboarding, fishing and golf combined with world class cutural events in music festivals, art and many diverse philosophies.

In 1879, prospectors made a discovery of their own here in Colorado; silver! At first, the mining camp here was named Ute City, but Aspen's the name, that stuck. The settlement grew steadily through the 1880's. Two railroads served the town and its population of 12,000: no one dreamed the glory days would end. But when the US abandoned the silver standard in 1893, the town's economy collapsed until skiers discovered the glorious ski slopes above town. Skiing brought the rocky mountains back to life; skiing and the dreams of industrialist, Walter Paepcke. His "Aspen Idea" was a vision of a retreat; a place to nourish mind, body and spirit. So many of the cultural riches that the towns offer today got their start in the Paepcke days. Traditions started here in the fifties established the rocky mountain towns as a premier summer cultural destination
