" Athens is one of those small southeastern towns where the town was almost literally built around the University. The downtown area provides something for everyone. There is always something for everyone whether you're looking for good food, fun times, or unique shopping, or whatever! Be sure to eat at Taco Stand and Loco's, drink at Sky's Place during your freshman year, and take advantage of the unique
atmosphere that Downtown Athens has to offer.
Lately, it seems that major companies are 'invading' the downtown area and forcing a lot of the local vendors and unique shops, bars, and restaurants to shut down as a result of increase rent. Since I graduted in June 1998, three major bars including Gylands have been forced to close their doors while StarBucks and Holiday Inn andother major chain stores invade downtown. If you're in the Athens area, I urge you to do something to help in the fight to preserve
the historic Dowtown Athens. Many people are attempting to push for legislation that will cease the destruction of our downtown area by chain stores and preserve the historic identity that Athens has gained over the years."
