Ayers is a patronymic version of the surname Ayer , an English Nickname for the man who was well known to be the heir to a title or fortune, from the Middle English word eir, eyr = heir. Variants include Ayr, Ayre, Eyer, Eyre, Hayer, Heyer , among others.

Some Related Ayers Family History?

"The Ayers Family heritage trace back to, "Jolly Old England." The geneology begins with Joshua Whitaker and Jane Parker. Joshua was born in 1673 and married Jane. (date unknown) Joshua was killed during a religious uprising in London in 1693. Jane moved to America with her children in 1722.

Earlier Joel Ayers had moved from England with his children,, and left his son Joel behind in North Carolina, after a dispute. Joel had a son, whom he named Joel (born in 1827) Joel married Martha Patsy Whitaker on January 18, 1849. They became farmers in Surry County North Carolina. Joel actually left for a stint to fight in the civil war and was wounded in the Great Valley Campaign and actually re-enlisted again, because his name appeared on the muster rolls in 1864, even though he had been discharged in 1862.

Joel and Martha had 6 children. The oldest, Abraham, was born on June 6, 1850, and later married, Sara Phillips. They had 11 children. one of their sons was Joel Oliver Ayers, born on Feb. 6, 1876. Joel was married twice. Once to Cordelia Smith and once to Lizzy Wampler. Together he fathered 7 children. One of those, was John Lewis Ayers, born June 18, 1912, in Surry County, North Carolina, near Winston Salem.

He moved to Appalachia Virginia as a child, where he later met and married Ada Short. They had 14 children, of which I am the youngest son Roger.

A few years back, after much research, a book was released by Paul T. Ayers, who lives in the Winston Salem area, tracing our families history thru the current children and including the young generation of the Ayers Family, now growing up.

It is my understanding an update, going even farther back and also including young that was born since the last book, is now being written. The book includes the original Ayers Family Crest, from England, which has been used on t-shirts and other clothing apparal, at family reunions, as well as an in-depth history of the Ayers Family, to that point.

If you believe you may be kin to me or need information about a relative, that may have married an Ayers,go to the e-mail links page, and send me an e-mail. I will gladly look through the family book and try to get the info you need.

The Ayers Family history is rich and the future looks richer."

FAMILY STORY TAKEN FROM  WASHINGTON COUNTY FORUM

Posted by Nancy L. Ayers, nlayers@home.com on Fri, 04 Aug 2000, in response to LELA CLIFTON AYERS, posted by Patsy Campbell on Fri, 04 Aug 2000

Surname: Ayers

My grandmother, Lela Clifton Ayers often talked of her two brothers Carl and Hubert. According to Lela, they died both in the early evening sitting on her front porch; Hubert one Thursday and Carl the next Thursday. Both had related to her that they wanted to talk with her later after everyone had gone to bed; as if to say they wanted to tell her something private. Both died from heart attack.

This is the story she related to me personally.

Since my grandmother's parents and all her siblings were dead in their 40s, she lived close to 50 years without any close relatives. Therefore, she tried to keep in touch with her nieces and nephews.
