Dedication To My Mother

Dora May Barber Horle

1874 - 1961

_________________________________

The preparation of this genealogy was on of my mother's most enjoyable activities, for she always had a great interest in people and in history, but above all pride in the family's heritage. After my father died in May 1960, she considered this piece of work as complete as she could make it. Thus it was ready for its final draft for printing when she passed away almost a year later. Then my sister's last illness the following year prevented her from accomplishing its publication, so it became a part of my inheritance.

The very close mother and daughter relationship for over fifty-five years, from my birth to her death, was and always will be a priceless possession. Now it this May, the month of memories, I dedicate this record to my mother, to serve as a memorial for these three loved ones. Their long, active and productive individual lives have given a wealth of wisdom and pleasure, not only to me, but to my husband and our two sons.

No genealogy is ever really finished. I have taken the liberty to add a few statistics for 1961 and 1962, on pages 12 and 13 of her record. Additional pages can be inserted, so I hope that you, the members of various branches of the Barber Family receiving copies, will contribute future items to this fine record.

Barber Family Record

1620 - 1960

By Dora M. Barber Horle

"Sooner or later all of us who are not wholly given over to money grabbing, find springing up within us an eagerness to know more perfectly the ancestors from whom we come, and the conditions of life in which they lived."

George Soule - b. 1590 - d. 1680

George Soule, the thirty-fifth signer of the Mayflower Compact, was from Eckington, Worcestershire, England. His father, Robert Soule (Sowle) of London, had acquired wealth and education his sons under tutors of highest learning. Edward Winslow found him near London and prevailed upon him to join them. Soule brought with him a library and his ability was soon recognized.

In the division of lands, Soule was allotted one acre of land "on the South Side of the brooke to the baywards." His home and lot were near Eel River at first. In 1645, with Miles Standish and others, he crossed the bay and founded a new home at Duxbury, located at Powder Point, where he lived the rest of his life. At Duxbury he served as selectman and civil magistrate, and was frequently reelected . He was also representative to the General Court in 1645, and most of the time thereafter up to 1654.

Soule became an original proprietor in the founding of four new settlements. He served on various committees of the settlement and collaborated with high officials in revising of Colonial laws. A position of great responsibility.

He outlived nearly all the passengers of the Mayflower, his old friend John Alden surviving him only by seven years. The only memorial is a gourd shell, once belonging to him, in the "Hall" at Plymouth, Mass.

Mary Becket, b. 1605, d 1676 -7, came from England on the ship "Anne" in 1623 and married George Soule before 1627. Among their several children was Susannah, who married, before 1660, Francis West, one of the West family, who had come over from England soon after the first settlement at Plymouth.

Records show that Susannah Soule West was left but 12 pence by the will of her father, and somehow she was lost track of for many years.

Finally, in a house being torn down, her diary was found. Then at a meeting of the Mayflower Descendants, in May ,1924, a "Memorandum Book" written by Elder Samuel West, great grandson of Frances West, was presented to the society by his (Samuel's) granddaughter, Mrs. Elvira Gerusha (West) CONEY, aged 86, of Ware, Mass. This contained information, which, together with other known facts, established, beyond doubt, the proof that Susannah Soule married Francis West before 1660.

They had nine children, one of whom was daughter --born about 1665, d. April 14, 1758, who married Moses Barber March 20,1691/2 in South Kingston, R.I.

(in some hand written records the name "West" was mistaken and recorded as "Wait".)

BARBER

The Barber family history dates back nearly 900 years, taking their name from their occupation, which was hair dressing and wound dressing in which they were accounted very skillful. They were styled the Baron's Barber by the nobility before surnames were much used. The red and white sign posts (barber poles) signify white bandages soaked in blood.

About 1633 James Barber, born about 1612-14, with his brothers, came from Berkshire, England, landing at Boston. Later James went to Newport, R.I., and was known to be the owner of 1/36 part of all lands of the westerly Purchases in R.I. of which there were two, roughly estimated at 40,000 acres. James Barber's share was at least 1000 acres.

In July 2, 1667 he was listed as a member of the town Council of Newport, R.I. in R.I. Colonial Records Vol. II, p.213, 214. See also James Barber in Naragansett Historical Register Vol, I, No. 4, p. 319.

MOSES BARBER

Moses Barber, probably the son of James Barber, was born in 1652. In 1693 he bought 350 acres of land in South Kingston, R.I. On this land, originally bought by Moses Barber, there are brooks and ponds. The southerly of these is still known as Barber's Pond. It is situated about two miles northwest of West Kingston on State Highway #2. A little west of this pond Moses built his residence, and here he died in 1733. Just west of the pond and north of the road in his grave, marked only by a pile of stone. A few years ago while rebuilding the road his remains were disturbed. A sign there reads "Barber's Grove".

Previous to his death he had located several sons on land in Kingston and Westerly.

The name Barber is found frequently throughout R.I. in addition to persons of that name we find the name attached to saw mills, lumber mills, lace mills, communities, streets etc., especially in North and South Kingston, Exeter and Richmond. There is a Barber Heights and Barberville.

This information was emailed to me by John Barber, 01/02/02.  This is a copy of the email. In another email John Barber said that he would also send me some old photos of this family as soon as he could find some time to scan then into his computer.
