"In 1879 Henry T. Blythe, a Methodist circuit rider, founded
the first post office in what would become "Blythesville". By 1880, Reverend Blythe had developed a plan for the town and by 1881, he was selling land "lots." Prior to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Mississippi County had thousands of acres of cypress and hardwood trees. With the demand for cheap timberland to be harvested for rebuilding the large city "by 1890 the sleepy, backwoods town had become a rip-roaring mill camp with looking-for-trouble honky tonks, pool halls, rooming houses, slick businessmen with waxed mustaches and questionable ladies...". The city of Blytheville was incorporated in May 1889

In the early days of Blytheville's growth, the town and Blythe, the man, were thought of as one and the same. Born in 1816 in Virginia, Blythe moved to present day Armorel in 1853. It is known that he had five wives, all of whom he outlived, and produced nine children, two of whom never reached adulthood. An activist, Blythe's influence was felt not only in the local church but also in the Masonic lodge, court matters, politics, and possibly even in school
administration. Unfortunately, much of the early history of Blytheville and of Blythe himself was lost in 1926 when the First Methodist Church of Blytheville's records were burned. Blythe died in 1904 at the age of 88."
