On The Beautiful Scuppernong River

"Columbia boasts one of North Carolina's most picturesque waterfronts and offers protected, deep water anchorages along our town docks. In 1995 construction was completed on a mile long boardwalk that extends along the waterfront and meanders through a pristine maritime forest located on the Scuppernong.

In addition to the beautiful Scuppernong River, Tyrrell County is bordered on the north by the Albermarle Sound (one of the East Coast's largest estuarine systems), and to the east by the Alligator River (which is part of the Atlantic coast Intracoastal Waterway System). It goes without saying that water born activities are a major part of Columbia and Tyrrell County's heritage and present day way of life.

Our area waterways provide opportunities for sailing, fishing, hunting, bird watching and many other recreational activities.

Nature and the environment take center stage in our county. Two great wildlife sanctuaries: Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge are located in Tyrrell County. Each of these in combination with our waterways provide a great experience for the eco-tourist.

Farming, seafood and tourism are the major industries in our town and county.

The Albermarle-Pamlico Peninsula in North Carolina is famous for its productive farmland. Tyrrell county is ranked near the top in North Carolina in the production of corn, beans and potatoes.

From the water Tyrrellineans harvest major catches of Atlantic blue crab, flounder and other fin-fish.

Tourism has become an increasingly important part of our economy as more and more people discover the uncrowded unspoiled beauty we have to offer.
