Creswell History

Population: 294

Creswell, officially founded in 1874, existed as a community and was known as Cool Springs as early as 1826. The community's postmaster named the town for John A. Creswell, the U.S. Postmaster General under President Ulysses S. Grant. For many years the townserved as an important shipping area for farmcommodities. Steamboats were common on the Scuppernong River until rail service arrived.

Today, the town and surrounding area are known for several attractions including two historic churches— St. Davids, built in 1803 by the Rev. Charles Pettigrew, first elected Episcopal bishop in North Carolina, and Concord Primitive Baptist, located between Creswell and Cherry and the county's only remaining Primitive Baptist Church, organized in 1810 and preserved by a local group of friends and descendants of original members.
