David Wilbur Arnold of Washington
County, North Carolina. Mr. Arnold did indeed have a
brother Zeke Arnold of the Pea Ridge community. Dave
Arnold was born in the Cherry community of Washington County
in 1870, and was the son of Jim Arnold and the former Martha
Ambrose Arnold. Have you by chance run into my dear friend Shirleyan
Beacham Phelps who, among other things, is president of the
Washington County Genealogical Society? Shirleyan was one of the
editors of that wonderful book "Washington County, N.C.......A
Tapestry" which was put together last year during the
Washington County Bi-Centennial. Among the 725 pages and over 250
photos is a photo of Mr. Arnold made circa 1900 shown with his
wife, (my grandmother) the former Sara
Virginia Spruill (1875-1956), my mother, Esther Arnold
(1899-1992), and Mr. Arnold's mother, the former Martha
Ambrose. There is another photo of the old homeplace of Jim
Arnold at Cherry, which is still being lived in today. Among
other things, Mr. Arnold was a minister in the Church Of Christ (DOC).
A book was written about Mr. Arnold "Seventy Five Years
In Tar Heel Pulpits" by Charles D. Moore (Deceased),
which reveals much history of Mr. Arnold and early life in
Eastern Carolina. Mr. Arnold passed away in Washington, N.C.
in 1970 at age 100. Living close to "Somerset Place" as
a youth, he knew several ex-slaves of the Josiah Collins
Family by their first names.
