The
City of Dillingham is located in
Southwest Alaska. You have reached the
website of the Dillingham Chamber of
Commerce and Visitor's Center. Dillingham
is a remote, but beautiful place often
referred to as "Nature's
Front Porch". Despite it's
remote location, there is plenty to do in
Dillingham - visit the Wood
Tikchik State Park and the Togiak
Wildlife Refuge.
Dillingham
is the place for eco-tourism as well,
with an abundance of wildlife, and walrus
viewing is a popular activity. Both
guided and unguided adventures are
available, but we have plenty of
outfitters to show you around, and plenty
of lodges for your comfort. Don't forget
to experience a float plane ride or a
float trip.ed

Dillingham
is located 379 air miles
southwest of Anchorage, at the
confluence of the Wood and Nushagak
rivers. Dillingham sits as the edge of
rolling tundra, with spruce and birch
covered hills nearby. Known as "The
Salmon Capitol of the World", it is
a commercial fishing port and the largest
town in the region. In 1818, Russian fur
buyers established a trade center at
Alexandrovsky Post, across the bay from
Dillingham. Before the Russians came, the
area was inhabited by Yup'ik
Eskimo, today it is a mixture of
Russians, Aleuts, Indians and non-Natives.
While
for many, Dillingham is the jumping off
spot to kayak the spectacular stair-step
lakes of the Wood -Tikchik State Park, a
hunting or fishing trip of a lifetime,
Dillingham is a friendly community full
of services that can provide just about
anything you need.
A
Brief History
The
City of present day Dillingham is located
at the northern end of Nushagak
Bay, and was probably first
inhabited by Eskimos and Indians of
various ethnic groups. In 1818, Alexander
Baranov, the first governor of the
Russian American colonies, settled at a
point across the bay from where
Dillingham sits today. He ordered the
establishment of a permanent post at the
mouth of the Nushagak River, which was
named Alexandrovsk. The area was rich
with incredible resources, and most
importantly a salmon population and
viable trade operations were carried on
at the post.
In
1837, Alexandrovsk was called Nushagak
when a Russian Orthodox mission was
established, and a meteorological station
as well. In 1884, the Arctic Packing
Company constructed the first salmon
cannery in Bristol Bay. Two more
canneries were established in the next
two years, the second one at the site of
present -day Dillingham, Fishing became
the economic engine of the area.
Equipment and building materials were
brought on three-masted ships, and
canneries brought shiploads of immigrants
to work as fishermen and in the
processing plants. Even today, Bristol
Bay is still a mingling of many cultures,
all taking part in the 6 week fishing
frenzy that makes Dillingham and Bristol
Bay, " the Red Salmon Capital"
of the world.
An
Eskimo village recorded as Ah-lek-nug-uk
in the 1880 census was located within the
present Dillingham townsite. The village
was also known as Chogiung. Between 1890
and 1910, the population and economic
activity shifted from the east to the
West Side of Nushagak Bay. Numerous
canneries were constructed at Snag Point
and other parts of the Bay.
In
1903, U.S. Senator William Paul
Dillingham conducted an extensive tour
through Alaska with U.S. Senate
subcommittee. The town of Dillingham was
named after the Senator in 1904.
Dillingham's
population has fluctuated over the years
from a terrible influenza epidemic in
1918, and also from poor salmon harvests
decades. Since 1960, the com
