A Short History of Fayetteville
(Taken From William S. Campbell's 100-years of Fayetteville: 1828-1928)
"The Osage Indians had hunting grounds in Northwest Arkansas long before the first white man appeared.
17-JULY-1817: Cherokees were given the Ozark Region by treaty.
1819: Frank Pierce, first white man, came up the White River and spent the night under a great Elm near what was later the Pump Station.
1828: Pierce returned and settled near the tree where he had spent the night nine year earlier.
17-OCT-1828:
Washington County established and Fayetteville chosen as its capital (at first the city was called Washington, but there was already a Washington in Southern Arkansas; re-named Fayetteville in honor of Fayetteville, TN).
1835: President Andrew Jackson issued patent for the land of original town.
1836: Fayetteville incorporated by Act of the first State Legislature. (There were eight all-weather springs within these early corporate limits).
1859: City Charter granted by the State Legislature.
1868:
Local citizens, apparently dissatisfied with city government, asked the State Legislature to dissolve the City's Charter. The Legislature obliged.
1868 or '69: Fayetteville was reorganized under a general statute.
1870: The County Court adopts an Order of Incorporation for the City.
November, 1871: The City Council repeals all Ordinances passed by previous councils, ("except those in relation to Agriculture College").
1885: Fayetteville became a City of "Second Class"."
