Crowfield Plantation

Shortly after the first English settlement at Charles Towne in 1670, a group of English planters from the Caribbean Island of Barbados relocated to South Carolina searching for good cropland.

These experienced planters were granted land in the Goose Creek area and were soon joined there by French Huguenots escaping religious persecution and others from England looking for opportunity.

This new community was confronted with difficult challenges in the frontier Carolina wilderness, but the Barbadian planters had arrived with investment capital and used their capital to purchase slaves and make improvements to their new lands.

The Goose Creek settlers became wealthy and influential by growing, processing and exporting naval stores (including tar, turpentine and pitch); indigo (a dye making plant); and rice to the British Empire. They also produced brick and tile for Charleston.

After the Revolutionary War, the community suffered a steady decline due to soil exhaustion and finally lapsed into a desolate and rural backland. After the Civil War ravaged the South and the slaves were freed, large-scale agricultural endeavors were no longer possible and the last vestiges of wealth in Goose Creek vanished.

Goose Creek, remained impoverished for almost 100 years until the Federal Government invested millions of dollars into naval installations in the Goose Creek area. The arrival of the military families and accompanying paychecks primed Goose Creek to blossom again. The community began growing rapidly in the 1960s and continues today.

On March 22, 1961, a section of Goose Creek was incorporated with a Mayor-Council form of government. During the last decade, the City of Goose Creek became an important part of the Lowcountry and State. Today Goose Creek is the eleventh most populated city in South Carolina and is a highly desired location that almost 30,000 people call home.
