Zephaniah married Nancy Norman March 18, 1869

Skinnersville Township Pea Ridge Road SR 1302, 3.1 miles East of Route 32. 3132 Pea Ridge Road was the likely dwelling

site of Zephaniah and Nancy Norman Alexander as a deed shows he owned the property. The dwelling was burned down by

the fire department. The front of the dwelling faced West and was approximately 300 feet South of the grave site.

3179 is the property of Sarah and Gary Mullenex (2001) and the grave site of whom we assume is that of Zephaniah Powell

Alexander and others since this property was owned by him. Zephaniah's tombstone at this site is a standard government

Union Civil War issue with the inscription Co, C 1st North Carolina. Nancy Norman Alexander is also buried in this plot. An

eye witness of the burial, a granddaughter Mary Alexander Koeing, said her grandmother was buried in this plot in an

unmarked grave. There is also the possibility that Hanye Earnestine Deshields, age 12, is buried in the plot. Earnestine was

visiting her grandmother at the time of her death and never returned home. Also the Union tombstone of Abram Swain with

the same Union inscription lies in this plot and most likely that of his wife.

3247 Pea Ridge Road now (2001) the Melson dwelling is the former dwelling of Jordan and Mary Alexander.

Charles Anna Alexander - Time-Line

Charles Anna was a gentle lady. She was very petite lady and never weighed 100 pounds in her life. She dressed to perfection.

She must have had a hard time raising her children as a 42 year widow. She probably had a very lonely widowhood. She

never missed going to church on Sundays. Rodney K. Deshields

She and Henry had had twelve children, nine boys and three girls. Three children, two girls and a boy died as children. Nine

children lived into their seventies and nineties. A sister and 8 Brothers, must have been quite a household. Rodney K

Deshields

Certificate of Death Commonwealth of Virginia File No 6481 - Registration District No 641 Registered Number 36 - cause of

death Avine Influenza - South Norfolk, Va - Burial Mackey, North Carolina

Henry and two infant children are buried on the south side of the Pea Ridge Freewill Baptist Church about 25 feet south of

the center window in unmarked graves. These graves can no longer be located today. Rodney Kenneth Deshields knew where

these graves were located as he visited this church in 1930 on a vacation from Sandusky, Ohio with his parents. At that time

Zephiniah Deshields (his father), Uncle Tom Graham Alexander, and two of his brothers visited this church and graveyard.

Uncle Tom said this is where grandfather Henry Deshields was buried, as he had helped dig the grave. Uncle Dan Deshields

also told him where the grave was. His father Zephiniah, and Uncle Dan were the only two sons who knew the graves

location. The Pea Ridge Freewill Baptist Church is located Southeast of Route 37, as you come off the sound bridge. In 1998

Rodney K Deshields placed a marker near the spot of the grave. The building has been expanded and now probably covers the

original grave. - Rodney K Deshields
