WILL OF JOHN TARKINGTON

14 NOVEMBER 1715

In the name of God Amen the fourteenth day of November Annoque Domoni thousand seven hundred and fifteen I John Tarkington of Scoppernun aforesaid (?) being very sick and weak tho' of perfect mind and memory (praised be Almighty God) and considering the certainty of Death and the uncertain time thereof do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following. First of all I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God in hoping for pardon and hereafter named, Item- I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Martha Tarkington, the Plantation and house with the household goods & furniture wherein I now dwell and the utensills thereto belonging during her natural life and after her decease to my son William Tarkington and his heirs for ever. Item- I give and bequeath to my said son William all other lands and Plantations also two Cows and Calves one sow two piggs one yeu(?) one pewter dish, six plates, one feather bed and my furniture and my Gunn. one large pott, the first colt that the mare brings forth(?). I now also give to my loving wife, and in case my wife intermarry after my decease, then the above Lands and plantation, goods and Chattells with their increase to be delivered to my said son William, when he attains to the age of sixteen years, otherwise continue under my said wife till the age of Eighteen. Item- I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Tarkington, one cow & calve one heifer of three years old and one yeu(?). Item- I give and bequeath to my daughter, Rebecca Tarkington two heifers of three years old. Item- I give and bequeath all the rest of my goods and Chattells not herein before given & bequeathed unto my said wife Martha Tarkington and her heirs for Ever. Item- I so make and ordain Edward Phelps of Scoppernum aforesaid overseer of this my last will and Testament. Item- I so nominate and appoint my Loving Wife Martha Tarkington sole executrix of this my last will & testament. Revoking all former wills or wills by me in any wise heretofore made or declared. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto lett my hand and seal the day & yeare first above written.
