Letters written by Swain

This letter is address to Mrs. John Swain, Standish, 763 Main St., Worcester, dated January 4, 1912.

My dear Edith,

I want to thank you for the dear handkerchief you sent me Christmas, it was very sweet of you to remember me.  The last few Christmases have not been joyous ones, but that one was such a good, good day.  I think even more than New Year Day when we put Doctin away.  Your ? & Charlie called me on the telephone to ask after Doctin as he was going to you and wanted to be able to tell you how he was, but I could say so little as heard everything, even up to the last twenty four hours he knew everything  going on about him.  I did not send you a telegram of  ?  ? as Charlie said you were not well.  I thank you and John dear Edity for the check and shall use it for some of the many things that have been needed in these last days.  ?  had a severe? sickness last March from which he never fully recovered.  He never made any calls after that but some days was able to go into the office and through the Summer and Fall was able to ride out every pleasant day but he began to run down about the middle of November and it was a gradual wearing out.  The hard part was he knew exactly his condition and was he said "just sitting here waiting for death."  I trust I shall see you in the future, but where I shall be I don't know now as I shall have to break up the home.  With a heart full of love for you and John

Affectionatly
Nellie M. Welch
