Letters written by Swain

This letter is address to Mrs.  John D. Swain, 769 Main Street, Worchester, Mass. (The Standish), postmarked New Haven, Conn, Jul 14, 1915.

194 Orange St.

Dear Edith,

I did not intend to keep silent so long but I have been working pretty hard lately as have kept rather quiet when I had the chance.

The people at the shop have given me a raise of 1.50 more. per week they said they did it because I was always on the job.  Well if some of the others would do the same thing the company world make more money.  Well I am rather glad that you are going to stay where you are until Sept. and I shall plan to come when you want me there will not be so much work at that time and I can get away much better.  I am pleased to think John is in a fair way to get the place in New York and I think you are right in thinking it will be best to let him try it.  I should hate to discourage him and it may be the best thing in the end.  I think of you so much those days in past years if I had know what was coming things ? have been different.  I think it is a good thing we can't tell for sure ? be more miserable than we are now.

Don't give in to Mrs. S____ an inch, there will be some way out of this mess yet I hope you are taking some ?  ? in the country and when the car fair is used up don't fail to let me know and I will send you some more.  Take John with you if he will go it will do him good and he will have a chance to think of something else.  Perhaps he can find a good subject for a story.

Nothing would please me more than to get out in the country and look on God's given earth.  These dusty smells of the city made me sick.

Did I tell you the people have gone to the Stone Hound went about 2 weeks ago.  Sherlon? is up there for all this week.  I suppose Mrs. Swain? and Ed will go soon.

I had a letter from Mattie the other day and I will send it along so you can read it.  I am feeling fairly good again and I wish I could think of you as being the same.  Nellie Welch is in the city I believe and I shall go up to see her before she goes back west.  Well I hope we won't get much hot weather this summer for your sake and it don't act to me as if we would.

Write when you can and I send love to you both.

Chas.
