Letters written by Swain

This letter is address to Mrs.  John D. Swain, 691 Bedford St., postmarked New Haven, Conn, Jan 20, 1931.

413 Temple St.

Dear Edith,

I don't blame you a darn bit for calling me down for not writing you before this.  I have no excuse to offer lazy I guess.

I'm all right and work every day when I have it so don't worry any more about me.  If I ?

sick I would let you know the first  one you know this, on the other hand I think I'm the one to worry from what you tell me in your letters.  Don't let Ed run over you a darn bit and I know you well enough so I don't think you will.

If I was him I would be so ashamed of myself.  I think I would do something to myself or go someplace where I could see no one that I know.  I suppose he thinks he has a right there but he has no right to demand so much from you.  If anything, I would not do it and you are my flesh and blood.

Now what is the mater with John hasn't he got guts enough to take a brace and doesn't he realize that it make it all the harder for you.  I can't see what he is thinking of and he must realize there is an end to all this and it won't take long to finish him if he keeps it up.

Where does Ed get his money to get stuff.  I can imagine what you are doing through and believe me you have got some brit to stand it.  I don't think I could.  It made me feel very badly what you told me about your Christmas and it's a dam shame it was this way and I'm truly sorry.

Before I forget I want to thank you and John for your Christmas gift.  Sometime I will get something I want with it.  I'm glad you liked your present.  I heard you say last summer you would like one so I kept it in mind.  I had a good time with the Clarks.  Max & Fran also the children came down.  Could not eat much dinner for at that time my old stomach was on the bum had quite a time with it for a while but its better now.  It's all right if I don't eat anything.  It's a good thing I love milk and I use a lot of it.  Yes I knew about Sherlon's moving and I will get the Chair if I have to go after and I agree with ? he had a crust to take it with him when he went.  Mrs. Fox invited me to come to Brooklyn for my birthday so I went down on Friday and came back Monday night the 5th had a good time and some good auto? rides? saw some of Long Island I had never seen before.  I don't think much of it.  It's to darn flat and to much land.

Yesterday the 18th I went up to Hartford and spent Saturday night with Melvin Snow they take a house in W. Hartford for the winter and I usually go up every winter.  Last winter I could not make it had to much to do.  I 'm not bothered that way this winter we are still on short time but this does not make any difference to me.  They want me to stick around so if an order comes in rush I can take care of it.

After I came back from Brooklyn. Mrs. Mercer? asked me up for dinner one night and she had a wonderful layer cake with candle on it and made me take it home.  I gave some of it to Miss Wright for I could not eat it all myself.  She gave me a small fruit cake and very thin cookies sugar for Christmas.  She is a fine woman and I hope you can see her sometime.

Just now they are building a new house and its going to be a dandy she says.  She would like some of the little pines I told her about from your yard in Whitman.

I'm still wishing you could come down and do it if you think you can and remember don't worry about me.

Tell John I will write him soon and I have read some of his stories.

Dr. Hamant? gave me for Christmas Scarlet Sister Mary have you read it.

A letter from Alice and want me to come up and spend Sunday with her sometime.

Love to you both,

Charlie
