Letters written by Swain

This letter is address to Mrs.  John D. Swain, 691 Bedford St., postmarked New Haven, Conn, Dec 8, 1932.

8 Smith St.

Dear Edith,

This is the first letter I have written since I came back to W. Haven.

It was nice of you to write me your two good letters which I did enjoy very much and the flowers you sent me were lovely they were packed so nice they were as fresh as when you cut them and you may be sure I did enjoy them for just at that time I was in bed.

I have been very careful since I had the last bad turn and the Mrs. keeps an eye on me all the time and won't let me do a darn thing for myself in a way I suppose its better for me but I do hate to be so helpless.  I always thing of Grandma for she thought she could do the same things she always did, I suppose we are all the same way more or less.

I do feel some better but don't seem to get my strength back very fast not so fast as I wish it would no don't it will in time?.

Nothing doing in the factory yet.  So there is nothing to worry about there but just the same its about time things should pick up.  I suppose when the new President goes in things will boom like hell.  I'm anxious to see what he will do about the only thing the Dem. talk about is to get the beer back that won't feed people will it or cloth them either.

I got some ? the other day and the Mrs. put them in pods with some of the red grass.  I don't know what they call it and she and Mr. W. drive to Norfolk yesterday and put in the cemetery one in our yard and one on Mary's.  She said it was the only thing of the kind in the place.  They stopped to see the Clarks but Mrs. C. was in W. Newton but Mary was home.

Mrs. Hamant has been ill again with two nurses some of the time but is some better.

I think it was mighty nice of Mrs. to do this for us and its a long trip up to Norfolk.

They made good time started about 7 in the morning and was home for dinner.  I call this good time for it's about 120 miles up and back.  I felt fairly good Thanksgiving day and we had a 15 pound turkey and all the other things to go with it.  The same week on Saturday night Evelyn had a party and had the table all fixed up with Thanksgiving things.  She asked some friends in a family by the name of Dickman that live about a block above us.  It was some party I did not get to bed until after 1 o'clock but was all ok the next morning.

I hope you can read this I begin to get tired.

Mrs. W. says for you not to work to hard.  I should say by what you tell me in your letter than you are not getting much work from Ed if I was in John's place I don't think I would let him talk to me the way he does.  I don't think is right he should.

Every one wants to be remembered to you and John.

Write when you can even if I don't answer.

Love to you both,

Charlie

P.S.

I can remember being tied to the bed post all night with a halter from the barn and no doubt I did kick, but I have forgotten that part of it.
