"Ketchikan is
located along the western shoreline of
Revillagigedo Island deep in the Tongass
National Forest. Revillagigedo Island is
the fifth largest island in southeast
Alaska with an area the size of Rhode
Island and 309 miles of coastline.
Ketchikan is the southern-most city in
southeast Alaska. By air, Ketchikan is
only 90 minutes from Seattle; 2 hours 10
minutes from Anchorage, and 50 minutes
from Juneau. Positioned on latitude 56N,
daylight on the longest day of the year
begins at 5:06 AM and ends at 10:29 PM.
Our shortest day has 7 hours, 10 minutes
of daylight.
"Ketchikan"
evolved from the name of an early Tlingit
Indian named "Kitschk" who
settled along the fish-rich shores of
what is now called Ketchikan Creek.
Kitschk-kin (Kitschk's Creek) became
Kitchikan, Kitskan, Kitchikan and finally
in 1900, Ketchikan incorporated with 800
residents and the name stuck. By then,
news of the richer fisheries resource had
spread and Ketchikan soon became the
"Salmon Capitol of the World."
The fisheries, coupled with expanding
timber and mining interests, formed
Ketchikan's economic backbone. Ketchikan
is also know as "Alaska's First City"
because it is the fist Alaska port of
call for northbound ships."
