What's in a Name?

Usually of Scottish origin: Patrick is a sept of the clan Lamont. Both appear often in the Ulster Hearth Money Rolls. Patrick is more numerous in Ulster than in the other provinces. Though Scottish names may be expected there it is probable that some of the Ulster Patricks are descendants of families formerly called Mulpatrick ( Ó Maol Phádraig). O'MulPatrick was listed as a principal Irish name in the "census" of 1659 in east Fermanagh and in Granard Co. Longford. O'Mulpatrick appeared more often in Munster in early records: it was the name of the erenagh family of Mungret, Co. Limerick: as far back as 1306 on O'MulPatrick was a Cork juror and Munster Mulpatricks figure in the Elizabethan Fiants, as do MacPatricks, the latter were located in Co Leix and Wexford. These were probably Fitzpatricks. That is possible also in the case of the fifteen families called Patrick who are in the Co. Tipperary Hearth Money Rolls of 1664. A Rory MacPatrick, is stated in the Ulster Plantation documents relating to Co. Armagh to be a native Irishman not a planter. The earliest reference met to Patrick as a surname is in Archbishop Alen's Register to a canon of St. Patrick's in 1229, but his name may have been ephemeral; in 1256 it is definitely a surname in counties Wicklow, Carlow and Waterford.
