Who was the most interesting character of   Pea Ridge and why?:
I won't use his name because his family might be embarassed but he was a man who like to dress up like a woman when he wife was not home and   roam around at night on the roads and byways. I will call him " x" .
Someone told me who had seen x getting all dressed up and how x  would pose and strut in front of a mirrror pulling his dress up and looking at himself  (the person was peeping at x through the window).   He had a whole trunk of women's clothing,
wigs, underwear, shoes and everything, better and more than his wife. X must have made a very ugly woman because he was over six feet tall, thin and not very attractive.   My father said he was coming   home one night and he saw this woman walking ahead of him on the dirt road and was thinking that was a very big woman,
the person stepped into the edge of the woods as my father appoached in his car.   He stopped where  he saw x and x took off running across the field.   My father  realized who it was and chased him on foot and could not catch   him.   Lots of folks had seen x in drag but this was the first time my father had seen him.   Many of the boys
there would try to catch x but none ever did, he was too fast!
Also, x was a big church goer, in that church every Sunday acting like a saint.   : - )

.
The best thing about living there when I was there was that it was safe. There are not too many places now   where it is safe.   The crime rate was next to none.   Pranks by kids, driving tickets, etc.

.

The worst thing is that there were no jobs available.   Most young people had to move away to make a living.

What Is/Was the Best Thing About Living in Area:
It was a quiet place where you never had to worry about crime at the time I was browing up there.   Loved to walk through the country there.

What Is/Was the Worst Thing About Living in Area:   As I've grown into adulthood and look back, it really was not that bad a place to live.   It just seemed to be so secluded.

Who Was the Most Interesting Character (person) of Pea Ridge and Why:
Actually there were two interesting characters.   One was a guy called " Buddy Man" he would ride his bicycle up and down the road all day and would make jokes and make all of kids laugh.   The other person was Ms. Ruth Bell.   The kids loved her, she sold freeze pops and candy during the summertime .. Ummm how I remember!!!

Any History, Persosnal or About Pea Ridge to Share:   During the time I was there it was a nice town.   It was safe to a point.   We could sit up all night with our screen doors open and not having anything to worry about.   It was nice because it was like everyone was family.

Any Fun Stores About Area to Share:   I remember when I was young we used to go over to the (Albermarle)  Sound and swim right behind " Sandy Pointe" it was a small beach area.   It was easier for the kids to swim directly behind the little seafood restaurant (Soundview).   I forget it's name.   I also remember our local church having it's baptisms in the Sound river.   We had fun playing around after the baptism was over. ...

What is/Was the Best Thing About Living in Area:   It was a good
sense of southern hospitality that I can't find much of now.   There was a lot of respect shown to the elderly by the youth
h too.

What is/was the Worse Thing About Living in Area:   No place to
go on the weekends close by.   The nearest town was always 30
minutes away and no summer jobs.

Who was the most interesting character (person) of Pea Ridge and why:
He lived much closer to Skinnersville - another thriving metropolis--, But I would have to say Mr. Lester.   He's the old guy that rides his moped up and down Hwy. 64.   He always wears a big silver helmet.   The day I brought home my car from the dealer, I saw Mt. Lester and decided to name my car in his honor, " Lester, "

Any History, Personal or about Pea Ridge, to share:   Not really.

Any fun stores about area to share:   Complete boredom is not very fun.   Sorry, but nothing to add here.

What is/was the best thing about living in area:   Peace and quiet.   I miss swimming in the Sound (Albermarle) at Grandma's house.   I really liked those two lone cypress trees that were in the middle of the Albemarle Sound. They are on the Pea Ridge side about a mile west of the bridge.   I saw a 1999 calendar in Barnes & Noble Bookstore with those trees as the cover photo!   It is a beautiful place.

What is/was the worst thing about living in area:
  Nothing to do.
Swamps, Snakes, Nosey People.   Depressing poverty.   I could
go on and on.

Any words of wisdom to share:   It's an interesting place to spend
a week in.   Especially, if you have no rural eastern North Carolina experience.

I received the following letter thought perhaps everyone would like to read it.

My name is Elsie Sexton Richardson and I now live in Longwood, Florida. My Dad was from Roper and I spent a lot of time visiting there when I was younger. His name was Paul Sexton. His parents were Joseph Edgar and Viola Sexton. I had relatives all over that area. The ones I seem to remember in Pea Ridge were Hattie and Joe Wynn, and they had lots of kids. Hattie was my Dad's half sister. I visited Pea Ridge this past Thanksgiving and did some family research. I visited one of Aunt Hattie's daughters, Viola Harrell. I think she lived on Barber Road. Does any of this sound familiar? The Wynn's lived close to the Sound.

I would really like to hear from you. I really enjoyed visiting there. We lived in Norfolk County, VA, at that time.

Who Was the Most Interesting Character (person) of Pea Ridge and Why: Being that I grew up in the heart of Pea Ridge, surrounded by family members it is really hard to pick just one.   Being that I am a Spruill 3 times over, you catch alot of " funny" family happenings, from uncles and their moonshine to great grandfathers teaching you how to mash grapes for homemade wine.   But probably the most interesting character from my childhood would have to be Mrs. Lowis (Lois?).   She always seemed to have an inside scoop on all of the fun things in life, and the flicker in her eyes as she would peer down at me in the floor with her dog Sadie as she siped her glass of Kambridge during one of my mothers, Gary, Ms. Annie, and hers Ceramics parties let me know she was going to say something funny and make us all giggle with glee.   She will always be one of the major influences in my early development and helped make me the person I am now.

Who Was the Most Interesting Character (person) of Pea Ridge and Why: Gloria Norman was my very closest friend all through high school at Creswell. We shared secrets, clothes and many nights in sleep overs at her house, because her mom wouldn't let her stray from home. I can still see her laughing and singing with me and can feel her connection to my life on Pea Ridge. I had a car, so I would drive us to school and school dances, the Hootin Nanny Club (sp., please it's been a long time) functions. I loved her like a sister. Her brothers were like my own. The last time I saw Gloria I was standing at the end of the drive next to the road and my Aunt Etta Ayers' house when she pulled into the drive with 3 small boys sometime around 1983-1984. I've lost touch with her and would like to see her or hear from her again to share our present lives and histories.

Any History, Personal or About Pea Ridge, to Share: I moved into my grandmother's home in 1967 with my father Ernest L. Ayers, after my parents were divorced in 1964. But, all my childhood life I can remember being there for the whole summmers. I remember fishing nets on the Albemarle Sound with my uncles and building bonfires on the beach after to fry fish. The Tysons, my counsin Wanda Ayers Tyson, and all my family eating in the dark by the fire. I loved to go fishing with my uncles, Warren Edison Ayers and Philip Earl Ayers Sr., more than life.

Chats on the front porch in the cool of the summer nights, because it was too hot in the house. I often sleft on the porch all night. We shelled beans and snapped peas in the early evenings and the adults would talk while the children played, giggled and slept.

We had no indoor plumbing except a pump in the kithen, that never stayed primed. A bathroom was installed on the front porch in 1964 by my Uncles, Philip and Warren.

We, meaning all local kids, would swim all day at Erie Spruill's or Mr. and Mrs. Holiday's pier, on the sound and run through that hot sand all the way home, and sometimes cut through cornfields to be home by 5:30 p.m. our curfew. We lived next door to Piney Grove Church, our front yard so it was quite a ways home.

Janet (my sister) and I would tote watermelons until we dropped in the evenings, yellow flies eating our legs and crying/whining the whole time.

There is just so much to share. I could never experience it all here on this page.

Any Fun Stores About Area to Share: I daily looked forward to go to Ms. Ima Goodman's store for candy and pop if I could catch a ride in a car going that way.

Otherwise, Janet (my sister) and I would walk the mile or so to Spruill's store in the other direction. But, candy and pop were essential items. Penny candy (3 for a penny) and a nickel pop. Lord knows where the money came from. We were children and didn't even care.

Any Good Country Recipes to Share: Don't cook, don't want to cook. I made this clear in the beginning of my new relationship. If we eat, he cooks. I LOVE to eat though. None of that fat, bacon, stuff, though. Can't stand it. I've learned a better lifestyle.

What Is/Was the Worst Thing About Living in Area: Yellow flies. Other, I wish not to share.

Any Words of Wisdom to Share: Life is a dream, stay in it.

Who Was the Most Interesting Character (person) of Pea Ridge and Why:
I suppose my most interesting person of the area is my
grandfather Dave Arnold (1870-
1970). Mr. Arnold was a native of
the Cherry community located
in Washington County. He was
a minister for the Church Of
Christ (DOC) and preached many
a sermon in that area at such

Scuppernong, and Holly Neck.

Any History, Personal or About Pea Ridge, to Share: I remember spending
a part of one Summer with Raymond and Lilly
Davenport who had a farm on Pea
Ridge during the Depression 30's.
I remember driving a mule and wagon
with loads of green tomatoes to a
packing station at the railroad
depot in Roper, where they were
shipped out in railroad cars. I
also remember attending home-coming
services at Scuppernong Church, and
seeing that mountain of food spread
on tables under the shade trees. We
stayed with John and Virginia Spruill

in the fork of the road. They had

good people were the salt of the

Who Was the Most Interesting Character (person) of Pea Ridge and Why:  My uncle Delbert Patrick and aunt Connie (Stillman) Patrick. Every time we went to their house in Cresswell, next to the prison farm, aunt connie would tell us watch out for the hole in the floor in the doorway from the kitchen to the living room. This was over a period of 30 years. I bet that hole is still there'''

Any History, Personal or About Pea Ridge, to Share:  My father,Joseph, was the first of the Stillman boys who moved to Philadelphia, in 1923, His brothers, Phillip, William, Mercer, and Gilbert, all followed. As far as I know the only relatives that are still in the area are  Aunt Connie and Cousin John.  My father told us that he came to PA with Cousin (Arlie) Orlando Jefferson Stillman, and that they were double first cousins, Two brothers married two sisters, In developing the census returns for this time I found that the Stillman boys, Jefferson Davis Stillman, and James Atwood Stillman were not brothers. Jefferson was James's uncle. They did marry two Davenport sisters, Claudia and Eloise.

Any Fun Stores About Area to Share:    In 1965 I was assigned to Fort Eustis Va. I looked up my uncle Phillip who lived in Hampton Va. One day he said let's go to Carolina to see Connie. He drove to Pea Ridge, and our first stop was at Cousin Roy Patrick's Peach stand, as I knew it. We went in and Phillip made the introductions ,This is your cousin, This is your cousin, this is your cousin,....... There were six men in the store and they were all my cousins. When he was done he said I bet you don't know who this is, Roy rubbed his chin and said that sure looks like Joe's boy Jim... They all laughed and said never tell a woman anything that is going to be a suprise, Connie had already been there and told them who was coming.
