Historical Highlights of a River City
Source: Ramsey County Historical Society
On March 3, 1849, Minnesota became a territory and the town of Saint Paul incorporated as the territorial capital. The people of Saint Paul were not alerted to this fact until four weeks later when in the midst of a thunderstorm, the news arrived via steamboat.
In 1849 eggs in Saint Paul were19 cents a pound, and coffee was ten cents a pound.
In 1850 the first business directory was published, including 18 carpenters, 14 lawyers, 6 hotels, 5 clergymen, 5 bakers, 4 doctors, 3 painters, 2 blacksmiths, 1 shoemaker, 1 harnessmaker, and 1 tinner.
In the 1860s, after the Civil War, railroads made Saint Paul the transportation center of the upper midwest and the gateway to the Northwest.
In 1867 the Saint Paul Chamber of Commerce was established.
The Saint Paul Winter Carnival was founded in 1886.
In 1888, some 8 million passengers passed through Saint Paul's Union Depot. One hundred fifty trains arrived and departed every day.
The first electric streetcars began their runs in 1890.
Saint Paul's baseball team, the Saint Paul Saints, became a charter member of the American Association in 1901.
By 1912 Saint Paul had 80 parks, squares, boulevards, and playgrounds.
During the 1920s, the first "noiseless" trolley cars in the country were made in shops on Snelling Avenue.
In 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited Saint Paul, and spoke to a crowd of 7500 men and women. Never before had a larger "dinner" gathering been held in the Northwest.
In 1945, a legislative controversy forced state offices at the capitol to operate on a time system one hour different from the rest of the city. The capitol was on daylight saving time, while the rest of the city set clocks on standard time.
In 1952, the greatest flood in Minnesota history poured into the lowlands of St. Paul. A total of 2641 people were left homeless.
In 1962, thousands marched from Summit Avenue to Selby Avenue for a peace rally. In 1970, thousands more marched the length of Summit to the State Capitol to protest the Vietnam war.
In the 1970s, several new theater groups were born; Penumbra Theater; Great American History Theater; Park Square Theater; and Garrison Keillor's, "A Prairie Home Companion" radio show began.
In 1985 the new High Bridge was completed, and in 1986 the tallest-ever Winter Carnival Ice Palace attracted worldwide attention.
The 1990s mark a new decade of renewal and growth -- Saint Paul approaches the millenium with a sense of excitement about new technology while carrying forward the character and charm of our communities. Saint Paul will be the home of NHL hockey when the new team, the Minnesota Wild begins to compete in the year 2000. Wabasha Street Bridge re-opened last year. Construction began on the new Lawson
Software building this year, signifying the push to become a leader in 21st century technology.
