Seldovia is an isolated
fishing hamlet located on Seldovia Bay, a
fiord extending off of Kachemak Bay. It
is home to 300 souls and has a varied and
important place in Alaskan history. It
offers tranquillity and stunning scenery
with great kayaking, mountain biking,
hiking, berry picking, fishing and
camping. It also has the services of a
medical clinic, numerous B&B's, the
Boardwalk Hotel, a full service store,
gift shops, fuel depot and several
restaurants and cocktail lounges. It is
truly the best of both worlds.
Seldovia
is 225 miles south of Anchorage. It is
reached either by flying to Homer Era
Aviation (800/866-8394) has scheduled air
service] or by driving the scenic Seward
Highway (about 6 hours). You can fly the
16 miles from Homer to Seldova via Smokey
Bay Air, 907-235-1511 or Homer Air (907/235-8591)
or take a water taxi via Rainbow Tours
907/235-7272 or Tulchina 907/235-2490
which include a wildlife tour in their1-1/2
hour trip. A popular package is the
Boardwalk Hotel's (907/234-7816) fly one-way
(glacier tour) and return by boat.
Native
residents are mixed Dena'ina Indian and
Sugpiaq Eskimo (also known as Alutiiq).
The name Seldovia is derived from "Seldevoy,"
a Russian word meaning "herring bay."
Between 1869 and 1882, a trading post was
located here. A post office was
established in 1898. the village
developed around commercial fishing and
fish processing.
15.2%
of the population are Alaska Natives. A
federally recognized tribe is located in
the community. The community is primarily
non-Native; although a recognized Native
village exists here. Commercial fishing
and subsistence are an integral part of
the local culture.
During
the April 1990 U.S. Census, there were
221 total housing units, and 92 of these
were vacant. 97 jobs were estimated to be
in the community. The official
unemployment rate at that time was 11.8%.
50.3% of all adults were not in the work
force. The median household income was $27,500,
and 16.2% of residents were living below
the poverty level.
Water
is derived from the Fish Creek Reservoir,
is treated, stored in a tank, and
distributed via water mains. Sewage is
piped to a community septic tank for
primary treatment, then discharges to an
ocean outfall. All homes are completely
plumbed. Most homes are served by the
piped water and sewer system; individual
well systems do not produce potable water.
Funds have been requested to provide
water and on-site septic tanks to these
substandard households, and to protect
ground water quality. Funds have also
been requested to expand the system to
areas for new development. The landfill
is operated by a private firm, SOS.
Electricity
is provided by Homer Electric Assoc/AEG&T.
There
is one school located in the community,
attended by 97 students.
Local
hospitals or health clinics include
Seldovia Health Clinic. Auxilliary health
care is provided by Seldovia Volunteer
Fire & Rescue (234-7812); flight to
South Peninsula Hospital in Homer.
Seldovia
is a commercial fishing and processing
center, primarily shellfish. 62 residents
hold commercial fishing permits. Timber
operations at Jakolof Bay and Seldovia
Bay have affected the community economy.
Tourism is increasing.
A
State-owned 1,845' gravel airstrip and
seaplane base are available. Direct
flights are provided to Homer and
Anchorage, with connections to Kodiak and
Kenai. The State Ferry System connects to
Homer, where the Sterling Highway enables
road access. Private tour boats are also
available for passenger commutes to the
mainland. A harbor and boat haul-out
facilities are available.
