There are actually two islands in the Padre Island chain. Padre Island itself runs 120 miles along the Texas coast, southward from Corpus Christi Bay to near the Mexican border at Port Isabel. Long and skinny, the island varies in width from almost nothing to two or three miles. It is separated from the Texas mainland by a narrow bay called the Laguna Madre.

Until 1964, Padre Island, was a city located at the southern tip of Padre Island. Today it is an island itself, separated from Padre by the Mansfield Channel (or Mansfield Cut), an unbridged fishing-boat pass about two-thirds of the way down the island's length. The channel connects the Laguna Madre with the Gulf of Mexico. The only connection between the two islands is either by boat, or via 200 miles of mainland highways between the causeways at the northern and southern tips.

South Padre Island itself, is a 34-mile long barrier reef, averaging 1/2 mile at the widest point. It is 2.5 miles off the coast of the mainland at Port Isabel, and on the eastern of the Rio Grande Valley.

The Rio Grande Valley
The Rio Grande Valley is not really a valley, but a fertile delta sloping away from the Rio Grande River. To the east is the Gulf of Mexico, and to the south Mexico where the river forms the border between Mexico and the United States.
