What's in a Name?

The name Spear derives from the Old English Sperea spearman, one who carries a spear. The spelling varies quite a lot, e.g. Spare, Spear, Speare, Speares, Speer, Speir, but spellings were not standardised till the mid 19th century and, given the widespread illiteracy and semi-literacy prevalent before then, this is hardly surprising. Surnames were not common for most people in England before the middle Ages but there are a few references to the name before then.
