Western
Alaska covers the Bering Sea coast, Yukon
and Kuskokwim River deltas, the Aleutian
Islands and Kodiak Island -- an enormous
range of territory. Perhaps the
birthplace of human settlement on the
continent, it is more recently famous for
a golden beach, stream-clogging salmon
runs, the active volcanoes of the
Peninsula and remnants of World War II
and the Cold War.
Yup'ik
and Inupiat Eskimos and Aleuts are the
main Native cultures in Western Alaska,
where the subsistence economy depends
heavily on each year's returning salmon.
International markets also await salmon
and other fish taken from the area.
