TIPPING AND ETIQUETTE

In Italy they do things a little different.  Here are some tips that will take the stress out of your visit.

*********

At most restaurants and bars the cover charge (coperto) is indluded in the bar or restaurant bill.  The charge is usually 1 to 3 euros.

Tipping is not something that is expected.  The bar and restaurant staff make decent salaries so it is the exception.  However, if you are given outstanding service, a few euro will be grateful.  But do not feel that you have to tip.

With cab drivers, tipping is not usual.  If they say, help with your luggage then it is appreciated.

While in hotels, the porters' tips are not mandatory.  They same goes for the concierge.  However, a tip is always appreciated.

If you sit at a table in a small bar, ask first, there may be an extra charge for  table  service.  It usually will cost nothing  to drink standing.

Get the language right!  For example;  never use the word "casino" it must be pronounced "cah zee noo."  (If you pronounce it the English way it means a house for the working girls, house of ill repute.)

Reservations are a must.  All the best restaurants will be full with tourists and others.

If there is something on the menu that you are not sure of, always ask. For example; "scampi" is served with the entire prawn, eyes, legs, and everything!

The water at the table is always from a bottle.  No one drinks the tap water!  Therefore, you will be charged for the water.

It is always a good idea to carry an Italian/English dictionary or translator device..

Never forget that you are a guest in their country.  Behave as any good guest is expected to and have fun!
